Spondylus varius SPECIAL - 963070

A VARIUS WITH STANDING SPINES

Spondylus varius lives in caves on the steep drop-offs where the shells are filtering the water, valves wide open. In order to keep the upper valve raised, the animal produces an air bubble inside the shell, so it makes the upper valve lighter and floating upwards.

When shells are fresh one can see water moving inside the bubble, a nice feature to demonstrate to visitors of your collection. As time goes, the water will evaporate, leaving a fragile area inside the upper valve.

The varius is easy to recognize as almost all shells are white with a colored umbo and very short or no spines. Divers will notice that most shells they cannot collect without a hammer and proper tools: they are too big and cemented on the rock.

The present piece belongs to the type with a wine-red, almost purple, umbo. The main exceptional feature are spines of a seldom seen length in this species. The ensemble of colors and spines results in a true jewel among the many varius one can view.

Estimation: 150 euro or more. For Spondylus collectors and connoisseurs of beautiful shells.
