THE UNEXPECTED: A COLORED GIANT INFLATA

With the quantity of new fishermen in Balut, the buying pressure went high this month and among the many items, we got this fantastic giant inflata, not white, but slightly pastel orange-brown colored.

It is the second giant inflata we ever got, the first one being figured in "1000 shells", and only 0.3 mm larger than the present piece, but pure white.

There has always been some doubt as what is real inflata, as in the literature, we see at least two species figured as such: a small type with thick spiral ribs and a large type with thin spiral ribs. The giant we here deal with belongs to the latter type.

They are extremely rare, only two have been shown in the literature: the Kosuge & Suzuki shell (1985) figure 8 in the black and white plates, and the white one in 1000 Shells.

Estimation: the white published piece went for 303 euro in September 2012. We think this colored shell is worth about the same. We start at half of that.
