A GLARING NEW SPECIES WHICH IS NOT: IT IS A FAKE

The shell doctors came up once more with a daring fake: they acid Mitra cardinalis: apparently some orange-brown flecks did not disappear and the surface was already 90 % white. They then decided to put small black dots all over the shell, very much as seen in some Conus such as aurisiacus.

And this is the result.

As usual we put the "new" fakes in our auctions, so the public is warned. All too often visiting collectors go home with pockets loaded with fake shells, and even more with "repaired" gems. To the great jubilation of the shell folk of Mactan Island.

Estimation: A curiosity. Excellent to join to the collection or fakes, or for the coffee-table. 25 euro. This fake was not expensive, we start at my buying price.
