Chicoreus axicornis SPINY - 1015497

A SUPER SPINY AXICORNIS

As Muricologists know, this species usually comes in a dull cream coloration and it is often found in deep water nets: not exciting in general.

The present shell is the exception on the rule. In this specimen, the big spines are covered with small spines, an ultra rare phenomenon in axicornis.

In the literature only Reeve in the Iconica (1845) documented a shell with such spines, but his secondary spines are shorter than in the shell offered for auction here.

So, this is by all means, one of the best of all axicornis known when it comes to aesthetics.

Estimation: The sky is the limit for connoisseurs of beautiful shells or Muricologists. It is the second such "axicornis SPINY" we handle out of 734 pieces. The first shell went for 280 euro and measured 60.8 mm.
